The previous year his armies had been destroyed in the snow of Russia. Since then the armies of Europe had risen to throw off the yoke of France. The culmination of these events was played out on the fields around Leipzig in a multi-day battle lasting from October 14 to October 18. The fact that the French were able to fight at all was a testament to the skill and organization of the French military system and its leader Napoleon. For those few days more than half a million men gathered to fight over how Europe would be ruled for the next several generations. The ÒBattle of NationsÓ was the greatest battle on the face of the earth until the world wars almost a century later. For the previous several months the armies had been moving around central Europe trying to get the upper hand on the enemy. The allies, Russia, Prussia, Sweden and Austria had tried to avoid conflict with Napoleon directly and focused on fighting his generals. This strategy had served them well. At Leipzig the felt they could finally fight Napoleon directly because they had such overwhelming numbers of men. The battle of Leipzig is also marked by one of the greatest cavalry battles in history. South of Leipzig at Liebertwolkwitz on Oct 14 huge numbers of horsemen fought the opening stages of this great battle.
